James Martin - Cheap and Cheerful ep.2

Delicious home-cooked recipes don't have to break the bank, as James proves by creating three meals from a single ham hock and prepares his personal take on tartiflette, a popular Alpine dish.

Artisan jam maker Jennifer Williams shares the secrets of her foraged fruit preserves and joins James to share some traditional teatime treats made with the help of her jam.

 1. Pumpkin pickle with fried chicken breast

James dishes up squash two ways: roasted in wedges and in a spicy pickle. All served with simply fried chicken breast.

 2. Tartiflette with bacon fat salad

Try serving this warming gratin of potatoes, bacon, onions and cheese on a chilly day. It's quite rich, so best accompanied by a simple green salad.

 3. Frangipane tart with custard

A Bakewell tart by any other name. Use the jam of your choice - raspberry is the classic option, though cherry also works well.

 4. Ham hock and pea soup

A luxurious version of ham and pea soup using poached ham hock and a judicious dash of cream.

 5. Wilted red cabbage with ham hock

An easy way to turn leftover ham into a healthy meal. Homemade mayonnaise on red cabbage with no cooking needed.

 6. Ham, fried egg, beer mustard and homemade chips


Ham, egg and chips is an underrated dinner - it might not be the healthiest meal but it sure is tasty.
