The Beechgrove Garden episode 5 2018
In the Beechgrove Garden episode 5 2018, it's tomato time as Jim is growing a range of viewers' recommended favourite tomato varieties, using viewers' best methods for growing them.
Carole visits young farmers James Reid and Rosa Bevan near Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, to see how they use permaculture techniques to grow veg in the most environmentally friendly way possible. And Carole is also in Garelochhead to take in the annual Scottish Rhododendron Society show, where she sees competitors showing off the best blooms from the vast range of vibrant varieties.
A Beechgrove archive clip from 08/07/83 showed Jim and George Barron dealing with a mossy very rough grass area. Back then the machine used to tear up the ground was a an unwieldy piece of equipment but it took out a huge amount of moss and rubbish from the grass which Jim and George concluded could be used in hanging baskets and even bagged up to save for next year.
Back at present day Beechgrove Jim and the gardening team were on the Main Lawn carrying out some spring lawn care. Now that the weather has improved it’s time to repair the lawn from the hard winter we have had this year. At Beechgrove the lawn is scarified twice a year – once in spring and once in autumn. It is scarified and then fed both times.
On the Main Vegetable Plot it was time this week to get the brassicas planted up as the soil here was in good nick and ready for planting. What Jim had chosen to plant out this week were Chinese sweet tasting cauliflower. He commented that range of Brassicas have changed a lot over the years as at one point the brassica
plot would have included a few types of cabbage and cauliflowers and maybe some broccoli and kale.
It was also tomato time for Jim but he was not going to plant them in the full heat of the day in the glasshouse. He explained what he was going to do this year. In his travels around the country last year the best tomatoes he saw were grown directly in the ground. This year we have decided to change the growing regime in the greenhouse by creating beds to grow the tomatoes inthe ground.
